The Outstanding Young Bandmaster Award is presented annually by Phi Beta Mu and KBA to young directors.

2024 Recipients

Abigail Baeten & Madison Hines Schmoll


Abigail Baeten is the Band Director at Derby North Middle School where she teaches 6th-8th grade bands, jazz band and assists with the bands at Derby High School. Prior to this, Abigail spent 4 years in Clay Center, KS as the 5-12 assistant band director. She holds a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Oklahoma and a Bachelor of Music Education from Kansas State University. While at OU, Abigail directed the New Horizons Band, supervised student teachers, assisted music education courses and presented at OkMEA, IMTE, and the biannual NAfME research conference. Abigail is an active member of KMEA, KBA and enjoys playing oboe with the Wichita Wind Symphony. She currently lives in Wichita with her husband Jake and their two dogs, Manni and Sal.

Madison Hines Schmoll is the Director of Bands at Andover High School in Andover, Kansas. She is entering her first year at the University of Kansas pursuing Master and Ph.D. degrees in Music Education, as well as serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Music Education Department. During her four year tenure in Andover, Madison taught 5th -12th Band at Andover High School, Andover Middle School, Cottonwood Elementary, Wheatland Elementary, and Robert Martin Elementary Schools. Under her direction, the marching band, concert ensembles, and jazz ensembles earned consistently high ratings and performed in a variety of venues across the state. Madison strongly believes in the power of community and connection found in band – she strives to offer every student the opportunity to discover their role as a musician and individual in the band world and beyond.

Madison has been honored as a 2022 Horizon Award Recipient and 2-time Jester Award Recipient for Outstanding Pit Orchestra Direction in 2023 and 2024. Outside of school, she stays active as a performer and teaches trumpet privately. Her professional affiliations include KMEA, KBA, KWBDA, and NAfME.
